Tales from the 'Hood

After finishing my ninth term of higher education, I dipped the 541 and jumped on a train headed for the 206, for a handful of days at my parents' house on Vashon Island, WA (located here).

When you "come of age" on an island, especially one with only two on-duty police officers, a lot of ridiculous shit ensues. Then, once you get off said island, and into the real world, you realize that things go down a lot differently than they did back home. And you kind of get used to it after not too long. This assimilation into civilization always results in ridiculous tales every time I head home, and this weekend has been no different.

Hit the jump for tales of the dead deer, and excerpts from conversation that could only happen on Vashon.

still.grimey Supports Husky Basketball

So my fellow students at the University of Oregon may not be to thrilled with me when I say that I like the Huskies, particularly their basketball program. But, fuck them. I was watching B-Roy and Nate Rob before they were watching Aaron Brooks and ...?
At this juncture in the tournament, much to the chagrin of my bracket, I'm really pulling for the Q-Pon, Isiah Thomas, and the rest of the boys in purple-n-gold to make a deep run in the tourney. While your boy yung.geezy does have them in the sweet sixteen, albeit losing to West Virginia, I think it would be a great thing for the city of Seattle to have a basketball team to root for early in April (because, you know, the Sonics got, like, stolen or something).

Eat your heart out Kentucky, the 206 has the illest dancers in the tourney.

Also, it should be noted that Isiah Thomas (far right in above picture) is hooping in a pair of Space Jam XIs. Should you not know what those are, click here.

BLOCKwork: FickNish

Once, or perhaps "If" may be more appropriate, you get passed the gold grill, unapologetic attitude, and the fact that he probably just stole your drink at the bar, you'll find out that Nick Fisher of FickNish.com (click to check it) is actually a pretty decent guy.

"The Shuffle Never Fails" & JOTW pt 2

I know it's redundant. Especially since the other Jam of the Week was posted in the couple hours, but why should JAM get to do all the easy posts?
Anyway, while I was mowing my parents lawn a little while ago (it looks great I might add), I decided to throw my iPod on shuffle. And as my good friend Nick Fisher, of FickNish acclaim, always says, "the shuffle never fails." Well, Fisher's quote is tried and true. I had a phenomenal shuffle experience this afternoon, and thought that you might enjoy it as well. I'll post the actual track listing of the shuffle after the jump. But while myPod was hard at work shuffling, and your boy was hard at work mowing, Busta Rhymes' "Gimme Some More" came on. And as the old school Busta banged through my headphones, it dawned on me how crazy dude used to be. You know, like back before he shaved off his dreads and was one of the nuttiest MCs in the game (see 1997's When Disaster Strikes and the music video for "Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Can See"). Anyways, I remember when I was a shorty, sneaking in an hour of MTV Jams in after school to get my hip hop fix in, and seeing the "Gimme Some More" video. That shit blew me away. My little ten year old self was probably bugging out thinking that all rappers were off their rocker. Then I watched it again just now, shit is still bonkers. Peep Game and hit the jump for the free music and the "Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Can See" video:

Busta Rhymes - Gimme Some More**

**yung.geezy's note- for some reason, blogger is fucking up and wont post the "Gimme Some More" video to the still.grimey home page. Fear not America, you need only hit the jump to be able to watch the video in it's entirety. However, your friends at still.grimey would like to apologize for this inconvenience, and lack of aesthetic.

JOTW

I have been in the party mood lately as I just got done with a quarter that was particularly shitty. As such, I will dedicate this week's jam to Shakira, a frisky little Columbiana who knows how to party, and probably also knows how to make cocaine. Her song "She Wolf" just makes me want to cut a rug to shreds, especially when the moon is full.

Letra esencial: "Nocturnal creatures are not so prudent, The moon's my teacher, and I'm her student"

BLOCKwork: Summer Time Block Talk

Summertime Block Talk is the one man music project helmed by my good friend Brian Jacobson (below).

Your boy does not fuck with very much punk rock , like never actually. But, being that BJ is one of my good boys, I decided to see what homie was bringing to the musical round table. With his new album Pillow Talk, Brian has used Summer Time Block Talk as the vessel to take his infectious energy from real life to your speakers. Growing up a hip-hop head, I really never took the time to explore the punk rock genre (or at least never knowingly did so), so I really didn't know what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised.

Wont Even Have to Use My AK.

Today is going to be a good day.
Woke up at the parents' house to fresh coffee in the french press (you already know are some coffee snobs and do not fuck with drip), my mom cookin up that crack (capers, red peppers, and caramelized onions up in the omlet), and blue skies over the Puget Sound. Even my bracket for march madness isn't looking that bad...yet. However, if 'Nova slips up to St. Mary's, my bracket is toast**.
But the thing that's so dope about being back at the parents' house (Vashon Island, WA) is that, other than cooling out and helping with some household shit, I have zero obligations. So now that I have some free time on my hands, I'm tryna be on the productivity tip for still.grimey. I'll be posted on the deck, exploring my iTunes, getting this blog thing back up to par; All while I'm enjoying this view:

and while I enjoy the view of the sound, here's something for your ear drums to enjoy.
"Chicken Grease" - D'Angelo

I've been heavy on the soul tip lately. Get on my hype.

**yung.geezy's note: Villanova just dropped to St. Mary's. My bracket is fucked. I like St. Mary's as this year's George Mason.

JOTW

I feel like we should maintain the balance, and pay respect to one of the other martyr MCs of our generation, with a cut from one of the West Coast's best. 2pac's "Old School" is one of those cuts that everyone who enjoys the finer points of rap's early years can get behind, regardless of coastal affiliations. Despite the fact that I was just a sparkle in Big Jim's eye, or was still rocking diapers, when the shit he discusses was going down, this track makes me feel like I was a part of it.

Nostalgic Note: "Went out to steal, remember Raw, with Daddy Kane, when De La Soul was puttin Potholes in the game."

We'll Always Love Big Poppa.

The greatest rapper of all time died on March 9th, 1997, thirteen years ago today. Fuck all the haters and the detractors, Christopher 'Frank White' Wallace, a/k/a the Notorious B.I.G., b/k/a Biggie Smalls, is the greatest storyteller/lyricist of all time. Who else do you know, living or deceased, that could go off the top and drop from memory some of the most masterfully crafted verses of all time. Don't get me wrong, I love Wayne and Hova as much as the next guy (no homo), and they are two of the greatest to ever do it, but they aren't touching Big's sycamore style (more sicka than yours). There is not one rapper in the game who could spin a more compelling narrative than the King of New York. Don't believe me? Then peep "Somebody's Gotta Die", "Gimme the Loot", and "I Got a Story to Tell" for starters.

JOTW

Yeah, it's been a minute. I know. School has been a bitch this quarter. This selection would be well complemented by wine and/or weed. Yeah, I said wine. Vino. Fermented grapes. Whatever you'd like to call it. Preferably of the bottled variety. Maybe around 8:30 or 9:00 when you feel like throwin' on the party shoes. Drink it at a moderate pace, unless you are slapping a bag. In the latter case, peer pressure and adrenaline will likely lead to a blackout. Godspeed my friend.

Legit Lyric: "I'm layin' in the purple rain until I see some action"

Have You Seen Wilfredo Gomez?

While up to this point, I am fairly unimpressed with HBO's newest series How To Make It In America, [starring your boy's least favorite whiny musician , Mr. Mescudi], I am quite impressed at the quantity and quality of skaters they got to speak on the legend of Wilfredo Gomez. In this short mockumentary, the likes of Koston, Gonzalez, Kirchart, Reynolds and their peers get on camera to talk about the craziest, if not greatest, skater to never live.

BLOCKwork: The Friends of still.grimey

I know what you're thinking. Last time I tried to get down with a series of blog posts (see the Nine for Nine series from the end of 2009) I failed miserably, only actually doing a third of them. What can I say? I was more into blowing dro, drinking IPAs, and watching basketball over winter break. But I digress.
So now that we've discussed my lack of follow through, I'd like to hit you with the first installment (of hopefully many) of BLOCKwork: The Friends of still.grimey:

IM NOT STEPHEN VARADY

This weeks installment introduces you to my boy straight outta Detroit, Stephen Varady(click his name to peep his game). A dude who many people in Eugene, though homie is now posted in Portland attending the University of Oregon's architecture satellite campus, have affectionately come to know as Steezy Stephen.

Another day late.

So for whatever reason I took it upon myself to run a day late in getting up the second half of the music I promised early in the month. But if you ask my roommate Yung Craighead, who has actually been dealing with my constant tardiness since 8th grade (we are now in our senior, err, fourth year of college), you're lucky you've only waited two days total (the other being for Dilla's tribute) to cop this second half of the February Full of Fire.

Even Yung Craighead is happy with me when I give away free music.

So here it is kids. The second half of a February Full of Fire.

Click here to download a February Full of Fire Part 2*

*still.grimey has not listened to all the songs on here, but they free mother fucker so take whatchu get!
