It Sounds So Soulful, Don't You Agree?

LaGreezy is aware not everybody's internal monologue is constituted by rap lyrics.

It's depressing that I'm dropping blog posts about as frequently as the God MC drops albums, but such is life. Additional similarities to Shawn Carter can be seen in the fact that I also do a lot of my writing in my head. Honestly, I would say I've probably written more posts in my head than I have put up on the internets. This is attributable to sheer laziness, and probably binge drinking. Again, such is life. However, what you are about to experience is the rare occurrence when one of my mental scriptures comes to fruition. So get excited, because what you're reading is a blog post almost 120 days in the making.

Hit the jump, though:

At this juncture, I have to come to the realization (one that I'm sure many of you came to years ago) that while I have a blog, I am by not a 'blogger' by any stretch of the word. So I suppose, or rather hope, this post serves as some sort of consolation for those of you who still decide to stop by this url from time to time. For my northwest people, this will ideally serve as an enjoyable soundtrack to the most frustrating time of the year: spring time. The time of the year when girls should be wearing sundresses, but they get scared back into their North Faces and yoga pants when they bang it out the first sunny day and it ends up pouring on campus the same afternoon. Hopefully this will suffice sonically, regardless of what the weather does outside; I find the contents of the post are suitable for a myriad of situations, social and otherwise.
One last thing before we get to the meat of this: I need to show some love to R. Kelly, as I opted to not include any of his music because I thought it would detract too much from the remaining cuts...and I would have been hard pressed to not make it half Robert Kelly.

Track Listing:
1. "I Love Paris" - Etta Jones- Note it's Jones, not James.
2. "Open Your Eyes" - Bobby Caldwell - Dilla freaked this beat properly for Common's "The Light".
3. "Simply Beautiful" - Al Green - This shit is what the title says, simply beautiful; by far my favorite Al Green track.
4. "You're my lady" - Sleepy Brown - Great neo-soul cut from that dude who (used to?) get Big Boi's sloppy seconds.
5. "Cigarettes & Coffee" - Otis Redding - Hard to have a 'great' soul compilation without some Otis.
6. "I Got the Blues"- Labi Siffre- Once the beat flips, you will shit yourself when you realize what sample just dropped. Not to mention this song is laden with, like, 5 super famous hip-hop samples.
7.  "I Wish" - Stevie Wonder - Because I'm a sucker for Stevie tracks that were sampled for Will Smith's soundtrack title cuts, particularly ones that had Sisqo on the hook.
8. "Never Can Say Goodbye" - Jackson 5 - I've always been an MJ/Jackson 5 stan, and this has always been one of my favorites.9. "I'd Rather Go Blind"- Etta James- Fellow still.grimey contributor JAM showed me this song two summers ago, and it's just phenomenal. This is heartbreak on wax. RIP Ms. James.
10. " Grandmas Hands"- Bill James - This sounds like church, but the spiritual kind, not the kind where they harbor Jerry Sanduskys in white collars. You probably recognize the intro from "No Diggity".
11. "Easy" - The Commodores - This is a great cut, plus I die laughing every time I think of Charlie Murphy saying "Lionel Ritchie".
12. "Sometimes"- Raphael Saadiq- Dude has had a phenomenal career, and continues to make great music. I swear he's getting better. This is one of my favorite cuts of his.
13. "Knocks Me Off My Feet" - Stevie Wonder - Okay, I'm just a sucker for Stevie tracks.
14. "Your Sweetness is My Weakness" - Barry White - While I'm sure Barry White could just speak and girls would be beating down his door, playing Barry White songs certainly never impeded anybody's sexual conquests.
15. "How Long" - Charles Bradley - JAM put me on game with Charles Bradley,  as well. If Etta was heartbreak on wax, this song is a lifetime of pain and anguish on wax. 16. "I Don't Stand a Ghost of a Chance (with you)"- Etta James- It certainly doesn't get much better from a female vocalist standpoint than Etta James covering vintage Billie Holiday.
17. "Window Seat" - Erykah Badu - If you don't like Erykah Bady and the New Amerykah series, you should probably go fuck yourself.
18. "Maybe Tomorrow" - Jackson 5 - Because listening to MJ when he was still black is just so much more enjoyable, and like, way less creepy.
