BLOCKwork: Summer Time Block Talk

Summertime Block Talk is the one man music project helmed by my good friend Brian Jacobson (below).

Your boy does not fuck with very much punk rock , like never actually. But, being that BJ is one of my good boys, I decided to see what homie was bringing to the musical round table. With his new album Pillow Talk, Brian has used Summer Time Block Talk as the vessel to take his infectious energy from real life to your speakers. Growing up a hip-hop head, I really never took the time to explore the punk rock genre (or at least never knowingly did so), so I really didn't know what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised.

The album is diverse and accessible enough to accommodate the majority of listeners. And if you enjoy good music, Summer Time Block Talk is essentially the punk rock Swizz Beats, a good ol' fashioned one-man-band-man. My favorite tracks off the album, at least for now, are "Dios Mio", "The Quest for Quintana Dub/Karolina", and "Me and Jukemob". According to the artist himself, "Me and Jukemob" is about "[some] real times with one of my favorite dogs, my good dog," . And for those of you who are more interested in the hip hop side of the equation, peep the "Ricky on Beer Back in Action" track. The shit goes.

I caught up with Brian while he was on spring break in his home state of California. I was trying to get some insight behind the album and his creative process, but I was also trying to get the good brotha to email me the recipe for the pasta and clam sauce that he makes [ladies, the dude can cook]. But this is what the man behind Summer Time Block Talk had to say about the album:

“Summer Time Block Talk was originally a self-challenging project, inspired by Stephanie Stokes, and how stoked she was on punk rock. I’d had a background in it when I was a kid, and I just felt that I could pull it off, since I could do it all by myself. The first album was an experimentation, and after listening to that a bunch, I figured out what I liked and what I didn’t like, and what I wanted to refine, and that’s how I made Pillow Talk. I’m happy with it and I think I can only get better with it. The music is kind of rough, it’s not necessarily a stream of consciousness piece, but I just kind of let whatever I was dealing with at the time come out and I just captured it’s ...-ness. It’s called Pillow Talk because everything is inspired by women, sex, drugs and homies...the good shit. And also, a huge part of the album, and of punk rock in general, at least from my point of view, is the display; the artwork, the live performance, and since I can’t really do a live performance, I had to grab a hold of this aspect through the display of my album, and I think it’s important to have the whole package of a tangible album. It’s more of like a cool thing to have, instead of just to listen to. It’s an album, a booklet, and I’m working on getting a live band together.”

And on what his next project is going to be:

“I’m just kind of waiting to get inspired again. I finished the album, started a cigarette company, everything’s just doing it’s thing. I’ve been creating for so long that I feel like I just can’t make anything else right now. I think my inspiration is coming back from being back down here (California). California living is just so fucking hardball. I love it. I’m just down here blowing hella weed, driving up and down the one, soaking it all in. [pause] Inspiration”
