Christmas Come Early.

I don't think I've been this excited about a Mariners season since the 90s when we were boasting rosters with the likes of The Big Unit, A-Rod, Junior, Edgar Martinez(when he could still walk), Dan Wilson, Jay Buhner, Joey Cora, etc.. And I don't know that I've been this excited about baseball in December since, well, ever.
"But Geezy," you might find yourself asking, "where is this new found excitement stemming from?"
Quite simple my little reader: From the signing of the man pictured below...
CLIFF LEE!

Coupled with "King" Felix Hernandez, the home grown pride of the pitching rotation, and all of a sudden we have a starting rotation similar to the one that won the 2001 Arizona Diamondbacks the 2001 World Series(too soon?).
And on top of that, we've got the Kid coming back for one more year, Ichiro is almost guaranteed to have another Gold Glove season, and we went above .500 after being just one season removed from becoming the first team in history to have a 100 loss season and a payroll exceeding $100 million.
Unfortunately, I know what happened the last time the Mariners engineered a blockbuster trade deal in which we ended up with a single pitcher signed to a one-year contract. We ended up sacrificing Adam Jones and George Sherrill(and three other prospects), two all-stars, for Érik Bédard, who turned out to be a complete bust, but it isn't the same this time, I promise. We've got Lee now, who is a proven winner. He went 2-0 in the 2009 World Series, the only two games in which the Phillies beat the Yankees. The first in which, I might add, he threw a complete game while becoming the first pitcher to not allow any earned runs in a World Series start. So yes, I am excited. Elated? Overjoyed? Optimistic? Those are applicable as well.
With the Seahawks tanking and news surfacing about Mike Holmgren turning down a front office job with Seattle just to turn around and become President of the Cleveland Browns, I'd say this is welcome news for any Seattle sports fan. Am I being overly optimistic since it's not even spring training yet? Perhaps. But only October will tell.
