Holiday Wish-list & Three Yuletide Jamz

This week I’d just like to put together my portion of what I hope to be a more extensive list of wishes that the crew can assemble for the holiday season.  I’d like to wish for the following 5 things:

Pondering Yeezy and Your Weekly Jam

"So you see Taylor, George Bush doesn't care about black people"

When I made the rather brash, yet sincere, comment regarding my apathetic attitude towards Kanye's latest I was largely influenced by a lingering bad taste that 808s and Graduation left in my mouth.   I didn't just dislike those albums, I hated them.  They were fatiguingly overplayed, and didn't deserve the attention they got from the mainstream listening audience, a group with whom I have not identified since I was 11 years old.  After the masterpiece that was College Dropout and Late Registration's solid follow-up, I was dismayed and surprised at Kanye's goddamn whiny, by-the-book, auto-tune laden LPs.

AOTW: Blackbird Blackbird and Star Slinger

So I'm a little late with this weeks AOTW, but there is good reason for that. As I mentioned in my previous post I had an interview in Seattle, The good news is that I got the job. The bad news is that I've had almost no time to write anything because I've had a pretty hectic week due to Thanksgiving and moving. But I've finally gotten myself settled in and now I present to you not one, but two artists for my AOTW to make up for it! I'm also because neither of these artists have released any substantial amount of work that warrants them a full post, so I’ve combined them because I think that they're work is worth checking out.

Curren$y-Airborne Aquarium

I want to just start out by saying Kanye's new album came out last week and I could give two shits.  I am much more interested in Curren$y's latest ganja-jet-fueled project Pilot Talk II.  Pilot Talk I was a pretty solid album, and I feel like Ski and Curren$y's ability to play off of one another is quickly rising to a, dare I say it, Primo-GURU level.

The Jam: In My Hood. The Artist: Freddie Gibbs.

Freddie Gibbs’s music and persona provide an intriguing perspective on the drab wastelands of the post-industrial Midwestern United States.  He comes from Gary, Indiana.  A city which is perhaps most famous for being a particularly disagreeable dump of a city and being the setting of The Music Man, an abysmal musical to which my mother subjected me as a youth during a time when, I suspect at least, she was trying in vain to raise the daughter she never had.

Forget About Dre.

With all due respect to Marshal Mathers, mother fuckers don't act like, they have forgot about Dre. And for those of you already haven't, you should scrap the idea that if Detox is going to come out (which it shouldn't), that it's going to be good. It won't; or won't be nearly as good as it needs to be.
You can't keep building up an album for eleven years (yes, eleven years and one day to be exact; 2001 came out November 16, 1999) and expect it to even begin to touch expectations it's set for itself. That is, unless Detox truly proves to be methodone in audio form. I'm not saying it couldn't be, I'm just saying that it was January of 2005 when the good Doctor said "Look out for Detox" on The Game's hit "Higher". The odds appear to be against this one.

Dr. Dre: Not the young man he once was.

Jamz of The Week: Afrocubism

This past week I was wise enough to check out Afrocubism at the Madrid Jazz Festival.  The group is composed of musicians from Cuba, several of whom were involved in the Buena Vista Social Club, and Mali.  Malian music is, in my opinion, the most accessible of modern African music, and the mixture of instruments creates an incredible portrait of the way that rock, blues, jazz and latin music have been reflected and reassembled in Africa, the land from whence they all came.

RIP Dave Niehaus, 1935-2010.

Seattle's voice of summer: Dave Neihaus, 1935-2010. RIP old friend.

I've never had more bittersweet homecoming than I had last Thursday:
After I had walked into my parents' and said my hellos/gave my hugs, my mom causally said "We saved these for you," and handed me the front page and sports section from that day's Seattle Times.
Because of my mid-term schedule, I hadn't had time to do very much of anything outside the school spectrum, so the front page of the Times reading "Dave Niehaus, 1935-2010 Our Voice of Summer" was devastating. And he truly was, among a multitude of other things, the voice of puget sound summers.
It's a surreal notion to try to grapple with; that the man who was a Mariner before any player even donned an M's uni, who was an embodiment of the franchise itself, died suddenly from a heart attack in his Bellevue home Wednesday night.
On Friday, I stopped by Safeco Field and signed my thanks and name on a poster for Mr. Neihaus outside of home plate, but I still can't fully grasp the idea that I won't hear him on 710am as I drive around the streets of Seattle.
Thank you for everything Mr. Neihaus, you will be missed; into the crisp autumn night goes the voice of summer.
Fly Fly Away.

AOTW: OFWGKTA

For this week's AOTW I’ll be taking a look at some cats from OFWGKTA, which stands for Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All, who are some kids coming straight out of the LA area. This crew of skateboarding ruffians are probably one of the rawest collective of rappers that I've heard of in a long while. These guys have lots of talent and can sound like Three 6 Mafia (because of the topics they cover) on one track or have a crazy DOOM like flow (albeit WAY more coherent) on another track. Thee are of 5-6 guys talented guys in the group that do everything: rapping, producing, skateboarding, art, and general mayhem, but the two stand out members of the crew have to be Earl Sweatshirt and Tyler the Creator. Tyler the Creator sounds like he smokes 30 packs a day while staying up all night producing chopped and screwed dystopian beats and Earl is just smooth when he spits bars and is a great counter to Tyler's gritty delivery. These dudes are just straight up gully. Don't believe me? Just take a look at this video of Earl Sweatshirt's video for the single “Earl”.

See what I'm saying, GULLY.

JOTW

Tracy Chapman, a jacked, black lesbian with a voice much more masculine than my own, holds a special place in my musical library.  I have fond memories of car trips with my parents when I was a youngster, and of many a drunken sing-along in my more recent past, in which T-Chap's tunes played an essential part.  "Smoke and Ashes" is one of her forgotten classics.  Soulful as shit, slow, primed with a chorus as apt for clamorous drunken accompaniment as "Talkin' Bout a Revolution" and "Gimme One Reason,"  and a finale nearly as repetitive and powerful as "Kissed by a Rose," (which will forever reign supreme in my personal pantheon of drinkin' cutz) this week's jam may emerge as a serious contender for the latter quarter of your party playlist.   I have no idea why the person who uploaded this song to Youtube chose a slideshow of baby donkeys, but I dig it.

"I said there's fire down below, I said it's only smoke and ashes baby"

P.S.- A cordial welcome aboard to Ndo, that picture of New Edition rocking Pony's is one of the hardest I have seen in some time.

Nappy Headed Do.

No Don Imus.
I'm talking about my boy Napoleon Do, a.k.a. NDo b.k.a. Nappy s.k.a. Nappy Didn't.
Anyways, enough with the __k.a.'s, already. Nap is a good friend of mine; one of my best friends, you could say. We went to college together at the University of Oregon (where your boy is still currently attending, and yes, where the number one college football team in the nation is from. Get at us!), and well, you could say that he is my asian brother, or, I am his white brother; but Nap would then proceed to ask me "GDBric, why's it always gotta be about race?" (and I'd answer: "because, mother fucker, we live in America. And like it or not, our country is always going to be about race, barring something mindblowingly progressive happening," but that's another rant for another time).
I digress.
The reason I'm writing this is because Nap just got signed in free agency and put on the still.grimey roster. Last night, dude hit me with this idea for a blog series he has, so I naturally decided to capitalize on it and have him start running a (fingers crossed) weekly segment on this space of internets. The series will be, as far as I understand, of an "Artist of the Week" variety. I'm not going to go too much into it because a) it's pretty fucking straight forward, and b) it's Nap's thing, so he's gotta do the leg work and break it down to you cats.
And don't for a second doubt this man, his knowledge of music would put most of us to shame. Dude knows what's hot before it even hits the stove, if you smell what I'm saying.

Napoleon Do has arrived; and he's finna drop knowledge on that ass.

Shoe Porn: I Love You, Too.

It's no secret that I love sneakers. So today, when I saw a new Nike ad titled "The Love", I naturally had to watch it. I think the ad is dope, especially since it captures a variety of Nike demographics, in particular the sneaker giant acknowledging the dead stock/sneaker head culture (see: Air Yeezy's in both colorways; with that being said [shouts to Larry David!] I think i still hate the Kanye Tudda X Nike collabs).

A still.grimey endorsement: Danny Brown

I have been meaning to post something about Danny Brown for quite a while now.  He is, in my opinion, the most creative and versatile of the latest crop of talented emcees that have gained the necessary notoriety to make it to my headphones (Curren$y, Big K.R.I.T., Freddie Gibbs, etc.). Danny Brown came to my attention via the omniscient Jeff Weiss's blog, and for that, I am eternally grateful.

In my opinion, the most striking thing about Brown is his capacity to base an entire song on a theme that doesn't include cars, women or money.  On his most recent release, The Hybrid, he dedicates an entire track to food stamps ("Thank God") and another to his views on prescription pills ("Generation Rx").  He has an affinity for Adderall, and attributes much of the writing from The Hybrid to the procrastinatoRx's best friend.  I sincerely hope any and all who read this post give Danny Brown a chance.  Passion of the Weiss, who shares a similar respect for his work, provides an interview and several downloads that may very well whet your appetite for more.  You should also check out Brown's Blog for an inside look at this eclectic genius.

Here's Danny Brown's "Shootin' Moves" from The Hybrid

A Quick Thank You.

Before I get into my typical charade of writing some ego-maniacal bull once a quarter, I must give credit where credit is due. My dear friend, and [primary] still.grimey contributor JAM, or fuck it, let's just call him by his god given name: James Adam Mahady, has single handedly held this once shit stain of a blog above water for several months.
On top of that, the music he's been putting up, and the analysis to go along with it is enough to put you and your favorite blogger to shame. Don't think so? Well I suggest you pull your head out of your ass and go read something, anything, he wrote again.

(Go ahead, I'll wait for you...back? And I was right, right? Great, let's get back at it)

Now considering I would wager a good amount that several newspapers and magazines (yes, kids these things still exist...) would love to have him on their staff, because, you know, his prose would give most established writers a half mast at the bare minimum (I would include the ladies here, too, but let's be real, JAM tends to fair on the chauvanistic side of the equation, from time to time), I feel incredibly fortunate to be apart of this venture with him.

Oh and did I forget to mention he's doing this all while teaching English in Spain? Meanwhile I'm sticking to my routine of weekend of Friday benders, Saturday hangovers (with the privalege of going to school where the football team ranks #1 in the nation), and the other days in the library. Advantage: Mahady.

JOTW: Temptations

Tupac has never been my favorite rapper. There was a time, I must admit, that I stated plainly that I didn't like his music at all, and that Biggie was far and away the superior emcee. Although I still believe strongly in the latter, I have warmed up considerably to Pac's opus within the last several years. I hope you all enjoy this song and music video as much as I do. "Temptations" oozes sex with the candid ease of Ginuine's "Pony," and still manages to make white suburbanites like me feel hard* as fuck when we rap along.

"I wanna take you to the movies, and the park. Find a spot where you can do me, in the dark"

*This is ebonics for "makes me feel like a tough guy," it has nothing to do with inspiring myself and other white nerds that enjoy this song to pop boners. Though now that I think about it, that would be a pretty awesome alternative to Viagra when my libido fades.

Cinnamon Girl - Prince versus Neil

Prince Rogers Nelson and Neil Young may very well represent polar aspects of my musical portfolio: a skinny, omnisexual, half-black, falsetto crooner with an appetite for dance and fornication, and a neanderthal like Canadian with a penchant for flannel and farm life. At different moments in time, I have considered one or the other to be my favorite artist, and they are forever present in my top 5, a fluctuating mixture of stalwart classics and musical infatuations. I would have to credit the eclectic musical taste of my parents for this baffling combination, as I was heavily exposed to both artists throughout my youth.

Now to the Jams at Hand. The other day as I was making a pass through my iTunes, I was struck by a desire to listen to "Cinnamon Girl" by Neil. As the search completed, I was reminded of the super dope song by Prince, off of Musicology, of the same name, which according to Wikipedia has nothing to do with Neil's version. Nonetheless, I have decided to pit the two against each other. The preference is decided by each listener on a personal basis; I am making no attempt to endorse one in particular at this juncture. Prince hits you with a dance hall ready, politically conscious jam, and, true to form, provides a catchy chorus to further encourage the boogie. Neil's jam is chock full of heavy guitar and a likewise catchy, simple chorus.

Big K.R.I.T.-"They Got US"

I promised myself I wouldn't provide a Jam of the Week until I established residence in Madrid. I spent 2.5 weeks in September sleeping on a cot in a tent in my friends' back yard in Seattle, and have been hiding out at my family friend's apartment in downtown Madrid for the remainder of the month. Now that that's taken care of, I hope my fidelity to the weekly Jam stays true until I pull up roots again and travel to a still undetermined destination sometime in the next year. But who knows, ya boi could find a brisket, or end up really enjoying his job over here and have to linger for a while. That is for the fates to decide.

Back to the task at hand, Big K.R.I.T. was recommended to me by none other than Geezy himself. Being that we have referred to Geezy's own father by more or less the same name (BIG C.R.I.T.) since high school, I initially thought the recommendation was an offhand comment about an MC who should be important to me for only that reason. However, en route to the Continent, I had ample time to review K.R.I.T.'s recent venture K.R.I.T. Wuz Here. It reminds me of, and bear with me, Bubba Sparxxx, but of the non-redneck persuasion. K.R.I.T.'s flows are fluid and precise, and K.R.I.T. Wuz Here is much more versatile and pensive than his earlier mix-tapes, which remind me more of Lil' Jon and Lil' Scrappy. Club-bangers we'll call them. Come to think of it, KRIT's abilities as a storyteller remind me of an MC with whom he shares a surname and an affinity for correct punctuation, none other than the Notorious B.I.G. himself. For a visual representation of the world which K.R.I.T. masterfully portrays in his lyrics, check out Ballast, a flick about how fucked-up life in his native Mississippi can be.
Here, for your listening pleasure (because excellent hip-hop seldom begets a mainstream music video in these dark times), is "They Got US".

"Since the recession it's been hard if ya strippin', cuz n***gas pay to get in, but n***gas ain't tippin'. She's short on rent, landlord trippin', tired of eatin' noodles that taste like chicken."

Jamz of the Week

This week I have been listening to a lot of KBCS 91.3 FM, which is an independent radio station based out of Bellevue College. For people who aren't in the know, Bellevue is an affluent suburb of Seattle. In this Neiman-Marcusian morass of affluence and materialism, KBCS shines as a beacon of idiosyncratic hope for a less monotonous future. Hit the jump to peep their program schedule and/or listen to their live feed. I would recommend Zulu Radio (Saturdays 10pm-Midnight), and the Spice Route (Wednesdays 9-11am). You can also listen to playlists and audio archives at your leisure online.
Now to the jamz, which were inspired by cuts I heard on KBCS over the week. The first is from the R&B/Soul artist Solomon Burke. "Valley of Tears" is a powerful soul/gospel ballad which he mercs with the help of Gillian Welch and some unknown white. It's one of those Jamz that some people will love, and others will hate. Give S. Burke a chance. The man may look like Jabba the Hut now, but he was probably knee deep in it in his heyday.

The second JOTW, is from Wiz Khalifa's recent Mixtape, Kush and Orange Juice. I have to admit that some of Khalifa's music is repetitive and bland, but a lot of the beats are agreeable and I like the stuff he and Curren$y have put together. He's one of those emcees that has a theme, in this case the ganja, and pretty much sticks to it, but does so well. "Mezmorized" is, in my humble opinion, the best song on Kush & OJ.

JOTW: Night Shift

On still.grimey's recent, epic road trip to Rock the Bells in San Fran (concert review and photos pending), Geezy exposed several of our other VI fam and I to the wonder that is the Commodores. I have always loved "Easy," but I am only now discovering their plethora of other steaming hot cuts. My personal favorite is "Night Shift," this weeks official jam. The Commodores pay tribute to their deceased amigos, and the archtypal eighties accompaniment and attire provide a welcome respite from modern music's auto-tune heavy bullshit. Enjoy.

Pure Genius.

Rick Ross on collaborating with T.I. on "Maybach Music 3", a new track of Rawse's The Teflon Don:
Just us being bosses and us being leaders and us being examples, we bossed up. We both did.
If we could all just be a little more like the Bawse and Cliff, and just be bosses, so we could all boss up, the world would be a better place.

Bossing by Example: T.I. and Rick Ross

[Is it weird how much I love how much Rick Ross loves using the term boss (enunciated: BAWSE!)? Well, I'll toss out a quick "no homo", just to make sure Officer Ricky doesn't get the wrong idea.]

...and now back to your regularly scheduled blogging.

still.grimey Presents: New Music Mondays

In the spirit of trying to be better bloggers (don't hold your breath), still.grimey would like to holler at its readers with some new free music as of late. As always, Young Jeezy is highly touted, and you probably wont like most of it, but maybe you will. So without further ado, welcome to the first installment of still.grimey's New Music Mondays:

"Making Love to the Money" - Gucci Mane

Some new Dr. Dre presumably off Detox (release date: never)
"Turn Me On" - Dr. Dre

Some new Cudi featuring Yeezy on some G.O.O.D. lovin' off Kid Cudi's upcoming release: Man on the Moon 2: The Legend of Mr. Rager (expected release date: 10.26.10):

Anyway, hopefull you enjoyed this first edition of New Music Monday. I'm not going to guaranty anything for next Monday, however, because still.grimey mainstain JAM, (former?) contributor Cameron, and two of our other boys from back home are making the journey south to the Rock the Bells festival in San Francisco, CA. But please believe we will be working on a review and getting some pictures up of the festivities (assuming they will let me rock my camera in the show.) I'm planning on hollering at y'all before our departure this Friday though, but I gotta get this posted to meet the Monday deadline.

JOTW: The Re-up

Yeah we've been absent. The grind doesn't leave a whole lot of room for blogging, especially since I do manual labor and have a persistent weekend hangover. However, Geezy has inspired a new wave of posts which will hopefully continue to be as abundant as our earlier days in the blogging game.
To the topic at hand. Over the period of time since I last posted a JamoftheWeek, I have been listening to Cam'ron's Purple Haze frequently. Some might say that it is Killa's best album, and I would tend to agree. One of the best, if not the best, cuts on the album is Down & Out, featuring Kanye. It is chock full of Cam's classic bombastic obscenity, and obscure references. What's not to love?

"Observe, cock and spray. Hit you from a block away. Drinkin' sake on the Suzuki we in Osaka Bay."

As an added bonus, you may enjoy this ridiculous interview Cam'ron gave after suburban whites discovered the stop snitching code and were fascinated by urban dwellers' firm dedication to its ideals. Cam takes the ideology to new heights, and Anderson Cooper is visibly disgusted. Hilarious.

"If I knew the serial killer was living next door to me. Nah, I wouldn't call anybody and tell on 'em. But, I'd probably move."

Right Back Like I Left Something

Your boy is lazy. It’s been longer than a fiscal quarter since we last spoke, which leads me to believe that if still.grimey isn’t your least favorite blog on the internets, it’s strictly because you forgot about our bitch asses. In the last three months plus a lot of shit has changed, but some things remain the same. Shall we take a quick recap on the last few months? Well fuck whatchu think, I’m going in.
We’ve seen a basketball great make a transformation from messiah to pariah over the course of a one hour television special, Big Boi release a new album (which is straight heat rocks, by the way), and all a colossal fuckery with incomprehensible repercussions in the Gulf Coast (can those poor people in the NO just get a break?).
Personally, I’ve seen the majority of my friends graduate, including still.grimey’s own (former?) JAM and Killah Cam, from University of Washington and NYU, respectively. I also moved houses, which is always a bitch, and I graduated from 21 to 22. Okay, so turning a year older doesn’t constitute the term “graduated”, but I’m just trying to keep up with my peer group, cut your boy some slack. Oh, and I shot a gun for the first time, which was rad. As my good friend Trevor put it: “when you shoot a gun, it’s like having two dicks.” And since we shot 5 different guns, I now have six dicks. Ladies, get in line (or perhaps a circle?).

JOTW: Money Don't Matter 2night

This week I've been trying to find myself some source of summer skrilla, as my formerly stalwart painting gig looks to be yet another victim of the shitty economy. Stressing a great deal over this is not good for the soul, so I have sought solace in one of my favorite Prince cuts. I was born in the Twin Cities, and I can proudly say that my parents used to walk around late-night downtown MPLS, and frequently spotted a short black man clad in a shiny, lycra body suit with at least two much taller, busty, aryanesque white chickens in tow. That man was none other than the aforementioned Prince Rogers Nelson before he hit the big time following the release of Purple Rain (one of the greatest/most ridiculous movies of all time). Money Don't Matter 2night came later in his career, but it always helps me to remember: "Just when you think you've got more than enough, that's when it all up and flies away. That's when you find out that you're better off making sure your soul's alright. 'Cuz money didn't matter yesterday, and it sure don't matter tonight."

Preach Prince.

JOTW: "Heart & Soul of New York City" - Red Cafe

This shit was my anthem at the end of last summer. I initially peeped Red Cafe's "Heart & Soul of New York City" in August, just before I took my first hit of the crack that is New York City. This shit just sounded like what I thought would be a summer day in the NYC. I was bumping it as I sat on my best friend's (still.grimey's Killah Cameron) roof on the Lower East Side, while we were shooting the shit, eating slices, and killing brews. And as we sat amongst the suffocating humidity, five stories above the inescapable sounds of sirens and hustle, I remember thinking: "There is no place else, in the entire world, that I would rather be at this given moment of time, and it's going to take an act of god to keep me from living in this shit someday." Please believe that by the time I got back to the Left Coast, this track was getting listened to every time I put hands on my iPod.
Fast forward to present day. It's week six of my ten week term, and I'm grinding in the Knight Library on the University of Oregon campus. I've been lightweight unmotivated all quarter and I've got an Accounting 352: Financial Reporting II mid-term tomorrow at 2:00 pm. I take a quick break to peep a couple blogs. First I find a new Jeezy track that just dropped today, so I stop, drop, and cop it. Next I scroll down to find the video for my summer anthem. This shit is so ill, it serves as (at least temporarily) major inspiration for me to get back on the scholastic grustle so I can make enough power moves to land myself in the illest city on earth sometime in the not to distant future.
Right back like I left something.

(Potential) JOTW - "Weapon of Choice" - Fatboy Slim

After a long day of hitting the books, I came home and hit the trees. I then took a straight shot to the couch, sat down with my room mate and began to watch Denzel's Man on Fire. What I didn't realize is that not only is Denzel Washington in it, but so is Christopher Walken. I chuckled to myself and then had a sudden urge to post the following video as the JAM of the Week. I would like to take this time to apologize to my fellow still.grimey contributor JAM for swagger jacking his steeze. With that being said, this is certainly in contention for one of the best music videos ever made. Enjoy Kids.

"Trap or Die gave 'em hope, They waitin' on a sequel"

So I'm super late on this, but whatever, I was gone for minute now I'm back with the jump off. This video makes me really happy. Hate all you want, but Jeezy is the fucking man, and for those of you who aren't convinced, maybe you should peep this interview that Complex dropped with dude (click).

And then last Tuesday the first track off of Trap or Die 2 dropped:
Click here to download Young Jeezy's "Greatest Trapper Alive!"

If the rest of the mixtape sounds as good as the aforementioned track, I'll be fucking pumped. And even if it doesn't, chances are I'll be letting that shit bang out regardless.
Hopefully, this tape is gearing all of us up for the highly anticipated release of Jeezy's upcoming Thug Motivation 103 album release.
In the meantime, while we wait for Trap or Die 2 and TM 103, why don't we all marinate on the first Trap or Die mixtape:

Heroes Get Remembered, but Legends Never Die: still.grimey Remembers Keith "Guru" Elam

Rest In Peace Keith Elam
July 17, 1961- April 19, 2010
y.g note: This just dropped-- Click Here to download the official DJ Premier Keith "Guru" Elam Mix

The Ownerz: The late Guru with DJ Premier, together the two made up Gang Starr

I don't want to contribute another summation of Guru's life work and greatness to the mass that is already on every blog across the internets. Not because I'm lazy, but because I don't think that I could do him the justice that DJ Premier, his brother, or Jeff Weiss could do, the justice that he deserves. What I will say is that I'll always remember the day that I got Gang Starr's Full Clip: A Decade of Gang Starr (of which I'm currently bumping while writing this verse) in 8th grade from my homie Ben Bucy. I listened to that shit non stop. I listened to it so frequently I had to continuously make copies of it to pop into my Sony Discman for the bus ride back and forth from school because I kept fucking up the copies.
Bosting one of the greatest lyrical repertoires, most recognizable voices, and legendary cadences, Guru (which stands for Gifted Unlimited Rhymes Universal) will be greatly missed for his contributions to the music community as a whole. And Keith Elam will be greatly missed for his contributions to the world.

JOTW

This week, I feel it is necessary to address the recent release of The Wu Massacre, brought to you by Method Man, Raekwon and Ghostface Killa. Although I can't say it compares to Only Built 4 Cuban Linx 2, it is definitely of a higher caliber than Ghostface's Ghostdeini: the Wizard of Poetry. As a side note, I plan on naming my firstborn child Ghostdeini regardless of its gender. If, in the most probable of the scenarios following this suggestion, that proposition is denied I will petition the old lady that we rename the dog as a compromise. Back to the matter at hand, this weeks jam is "Our Dreams," which is, in my opinion, the illest cut on the album. The video is a continuation of the Wu-Massacre promo videos, which were inspired by the murders committed in the movie Seven, in which Rae, Ghost and Meth take over for Kevin Spacey's character.

JOTW

Following the current trend of world music, I'm going to hit you with some dope shit that I encountered a few years ago. It's from a documentary called Genghis Blues about a blind blues singer, Paul Pena, that goes to Mongolia to compete in a Tuvan throat singing contest. If you haven't heard of Pena before, he wrote the song Big Old Jet Airliner which Steve Miller made famous. The Jam of the Week is actually a song he put out in 1973 from his album New Train, but I'll provide a link to some of his blues-throat singing work too so you can get a feel for it. I highly recommend the movie, it is one of my all time favorites.

JOTW

This week's JOTW is pretty unorthodox, so get ready to stretch your minds a little bit, and, as Nas and T-Boz did in Belly, go back to Africa. Tinariwen is a musical group from Mali that gets down with filthy electric guitar work and some tribal rhythms that are vaguely reminiscent of a different era about 20-30,000 years ago, when everybody was just trying to find some animals to eat and doing their best not to freeze their tits off. If you like this song, called Toumast, I would recommend getting acquainted with Ali Farka Touré, a fellow Malian, whom I know from his work with Ry Cooder on their collabo album, Talking Timbuktu. His influences included John Lee Hooker, a legendary blues man known for his simple grinding rhythms and dense guitar solos, and traditional Malian bard music. Rock and Blues are reflected in the music from which they evolved, and the mixture is about as unique and fascinating as it can get. If you like this shit as much as I do, get your documentary on, and check out Throw Down Your Heart; it's a movie about an American banjo player who travels around Africa and searches for the banjo's roots in several different regions.

Tales from the 'Hood

After finishing my ninth term of higher education, I dipped the 541 and jumped on a train headed for the 206, for a handful of days at my parents' house on Vashon Island, WA (located here).

When you "come of age" on an island, especially one with only two on-duty police officers, a lot of ridiculous shit ensues. Then, once you get off said island, and into the real world, you realize that things go down a lot differently than they did back home. And you kind of get used to it after not too long. This assimilation into civilization always results in ridiculous tales every time I head home, and this weekend has been no different.

Hit the jump for tales of the dead deer, and excerpts from conversation that could only happen on Vashon.

still.grimey Supports Husky Basketball

So my fellow students at the University of Oregon may not be to thrilled with me when I say that I like the Huskies, particularly their basketball program. But, fuck them. I was watching B-Roy and Nate Rob before they were watching Aaron Brooks and ...?
At this juncture in the tournament, much to the chagrin of my bracket, I'm really pulling for the Q-Pon, Isiah Thomas, and the rest of the boys in purple-n-gold to make a deep run in the tourney. While your boy yung.geezy does have them in the sweet sixteen, albeit losing to West Virginia, I think it would be a great thing for the city of Seattle to have a basketball team to root for early in April (because, you know, the Sonics got, like, stolen or something).

Eat your heart out Kentucky, the 206 has the illest dancers in the tourney.

Also, it should be noted that Isiah Thomas (far right in above picture) is hooping in a pair of Space Jam XIs. Should you not know what those are, click here.

"The Shuffle Never Fails" & JOTW pt 2

I know it's redundant. Especially since the other Jam of the Week was posted in the couple hours, but why should JAM get to do all the easy posts?
Anyway, while I was mowing my parents lawn a little while ago (it looks great I might add), I decided to throw my iPod on shuffle. And as my good friend Nick Fisher, of FickNish acclaim, always says, "the shuffle never fails." Well, Fisher's quote is tried and true. I had a phenomenal shuffle experience this afternoon, and thought that you might enjoy it as well. I'll post the actual track listing of the shuffle after the jump. But while myPod was hard at work shuffling, and your boy was hard at work mowing, Busta Rhymes' "Gimme Some More" came on. And as the old school Busta banged through my headphones, it dawned on me how crazy dude used to be. You know, like back before he shaved off his dreads and was one of the nuttiest MCs in the game (see 1997's When Disaster Strikes and the music video for "Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Can See"). Anyways, I remember when I was a shorty, sneaking in an hour of MTV Jams in after school to get my hip hop fix in, and seeing the "Gimme Some More" video. That shit blew me away. My little ten year old self was probably bugging out thinking that all rappers were off their rocker. Then I watched it again just now, shit is still bonkers. Peep Game and hit the jump for the free music and the "Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Can See" video:

JOTW

I have been in the party mood lately as I just got done with a quarter that was particularly shitty. As such, I will dedicate this week's jam to Shakira, a frisky little Columbiana who knows how to party, and probably also knows how to make cocaine. Her song "She Wolf" just makes me want to cut a rug to shreds, especially when the moon is full.

BLOCKwork: Summer Time Block Talk

Summertime Block Talk is the one man music project helmed by my good friend Brian Jacobson (below).

Your boy does not fuck with very much punk rock , like never actually. But, being that BJ is one of my good boys, I decided to see what homie was bringing to the musical round table. With his new album Pillow Talk, Brian has used Summer Time Block Talk as the vessel to take his infectious energy from real life to your speakers. Growing up a hip-hop head, I really never took the time to explore the punk rock genre (or at least never knowingly did so), so I really didn't know what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised.

Wont Even Have to Use My AK.

Today is going to be a good day.
Woke up at the parents' house to fresh coffee in the french press (you already know are some coffee snobs and do not fuck with drip), my mom cookin up that crack (capers, red peppers, and caramelized onions up in the omlet), and blue skies over the Puget Sound. Even my bracket for march madness isn't looking that bad...yet. However, if 'Nova slips up to St. Mary's, my bracket is toast**.
But the thing that's so dope about being back at the parents' house (Vashon Island, WA) is that, other than cooling out and helping with some household shit, I have zero obligations. So now that I have some free time on my hands, I'm tryna be on the productivity tip for still.grimey. I'll be posted on the deck, exploring my iTunes, getting this blog thing back up to par; All while I'm enjoying this view:

and while I enjoy the view of the sound, here's something for your ear drums to enjoy.
"Chicken Grease" - D'Angelo

I've been heavy on the soul tip lately. Get on my hype.

**yung.geezy's note: Villanova just dropped to St. Mary's. My bracket is fucked. I like St. Mary's as this year's George Mason.

JOTW

I feel like we should maintain the balance, and pay respect to one of the other martyr MCs of our generation, with a cut from one of the West Coast's best. 2pac's "Old School" is one of those cuts that everyone who enjoys the finer points of rap's early years can get behind, regardless of coastal affiliations. Despite the fact that I was just a sparkle in Big Jim's eye, or was still rocking diapers, when the shit he discusses was going down, this track makes me feel like I was a part of it.

We'll Always Love Big Poppa.

The greatest rapper of all time died on March 9th, 1997, thirteen years ago today. Fuck all the haters and the detractors, Christopher 'Frank White' Wallace, a/k/a the Notorious B.I.G., b/k/a Biggie Smalls, is the greatest storyteller/lyricist of all time. Who else do you know, living or deceased, that could go off the top and drop from memory some of the most masterfully crafted verses of all time. Don't get me wrong, I love Wayne and Hova as much as the next guy (no homo), and they are two of the greatest to ever do it, but they aren't touching Big's sycamore style (more sicka than yours). There is not one rapper in the game who could spin a more compelling narrative than the King of New York. Don't believe me? Then peep "Somebody's Gotta Die", "Gimme the Loot", and "I Got a Story to Tell" for starters.

Yeah, it's been a minute. I know. School has been a bitch this quarter. This selection would be well complemented by wine and/or weed. Yeah, I said wine. Vino. Fermented grapes. Whatever you'd like to call it. Preferably of the bottled variety. Maybe around 8:30 or 9:00 when you feel like throwin' on the party shoes. Drink it at a moderate pace, unless you are slapping a bag. In the latter case, peer pressure and adrenaline will likely lead to a blackout. Godspeed my friend.

Have You Seen Wilfredo Gomez?

While up to this point, I am fairly unimpressed with HBO's newest series How To Make It In America, [starring your boy's least favorite whiny musician , Mr. Mescudi], I am quite impressed at the quantity and quality of skaters they got to speak on the legend of Wilfredo Gomez. In this short mockumentary, the likes of Koston, Gonzalez, Kirchart, Reynolds and their peers get on camera to talk about the craziest, if not greatest, skater to never live.

BLOCKwork: The Friends of still.grimey

I know what you're thinking. Last time I tried to get down with a series of blog posts (see the Nine for Nine series from the end of 2009) I failed miserably, only actually doing a third of them. What can I say? I was more into blowing dro, drinking IPAs, and watching basketball over winter break. But I digress.
So now that we've discussed my lack of follow through, I'd like to hit you with the first installment (of hopefully many) of BLOCKwork: The Friends of still.grimey:

IM NOT STEPHEN VARADY

This weeks installment introduces you to my boy straight outta Detroit, Stephen Varady(click his name to peep his game). A dude who many people in Eugene, though homie is now posted in Portland attending the University of Oregon's architecture satellite campus, have affectionately come to know as Steezy Stephen.

Another day late.

So for whatever reason I took it upon myself to run a day late in getting up the second half of the music I promised early in the month. But if you ask my roommate Yung Craighead, who has actually been dealing with my constant tardiness since 8th grade (we are now in our senior, err, fourth year of college), you're lucky you've only waited two days total (the other being for Dilla's tribute) to cop this second half of the February Full of Fire.

Even Yung Craighead is happy with me when I give away free music.

So here it is kids. The second half of a February Full of Fire.

A February Full of Fire Part 3

Well friends, it seems that we've come to the last minutes of the second month of two thousand ten.
Here in the Northwest we managed to have two consecutive weekends of wonderful weather, while the rest of the country has been getting slammed with shit weather. But really, who gives a fuck about them?
Anyways, while I wait on a file to finish uploading to lace all y'all with new beats, I wanted to throw the the third installment of Stussy's J. Dilla documentary:

February Full of Fire Part 2: Video Edition

Barring a colossal last week of the month, I'd say I blew my load too early in proclaiming that February was going to a full month of heat rocks. Almost in the same vein as thinking my Tar Heels were going to make it to The Tournament next month. At the rate the Heels are going, we'll be lucky if we get invited to the fucking NIT.
However, the good people over at Stussy (click here to peep game-- they should be reopening today...) have decided to lace us with a three part documentary on the late great J Dilla (see the 'A Day Late for Dilla Post' from earlier this month if you are truly that far removed from this thing called hip hop)

Part three has yet to drop, but while you wait, you should cop some knowledge from parts one and two and marinate on what Dilla's significance in Hip Hop is.
Shouts to Passion of the Weiss for putting your boy onto this documentary. And props to Stussy for the project.
RIP J Dee!

T.R.O.Y.

They Reminisce Over You Lamont Coleman a/k/a The Big L (05.30.1974-02.15.1999)

Eleven years ago to the day, Big L, the "Flamboyant Records, C to the E.O.", was shot nine times (no Curtis Jackson) and died in Harlem, New York. For those not familiar Big L's music, it is the belief of many hip-hop enthusiasts, still.grimey contributors yung.geezy and JAM included, that had he not been gunned down that fateful day in Harlem, Lamont Coleman would have been one of the most prominent mcs in the game today. Big L was allegedly set to sign with Jay-Z's Roc-a-Fella records, but was murdered the week before negotiations were to be finalized with signatures. Below is a video of a freestyle between Lamont Coleman and one Shawn Carter, take a listen and figure out who you think is better.

Rest In Peace and Put It On, Big L

Sundays are for Dirt.

If you and your friends are anything like me and my friends, you spend your weekends getting white boy wasted and generally staying on the party tip, as pictured below.

While this is fun, the day after is typically less enjoyable from the night before. And when you're shlumpin around the house on your weekends, doing a whole lot of nothing except recouping your losses, well this is what we like to call dirt. What I'm getting at is by the time it's Sunday, the majority of the collegiate populous, or at least the portion that I can relate to, is hurting. And while you're boy can often be found thugging it out, when I'm hung over I'm inclined to listen to Neil Young over Young Money (actually, that's always, but fuck it). And when you're shlumpin around the house on your weekends, doing a whole lot of nothing except recouping your losses, well this is what we like to call dirt.
What follows the jump is a little somethin-somethin that I've comprised for my hung over compatriots. Best listened to with a blunt, a cup of coffee, and a cold glass of filtered water.
Feel better my friends.

A February Full of Fire (part one?)

Halfway through the shortest month of the year, I have accumulated a lot of heat rocks. While not all of the songs are "good" by hip-hop elitist standards, I'll be got damned if you aren't singing "Reverse Cowgirl" or "All I Do is Win" in your idle time. The question in the title of the post is derived from my wavering optimism that the second half of the month will produce the quality (and quantity) of good music that was yielded from the first part of February.

A Day Late for Dilla.

Four years ago yesterday, February 11th, the late great James Yancey, b/k/a J Dilla a/k/a Jay Dee passed away. Your friends at still.grimey would like to take this time to thank "your favorite producer's favorite producer" for the fantastic contribution he made to music , and take a moment to observe his memory.
Your boy yung.geezy will be bumping Donuts while studying for the calc midterm I have tomorrow.
And for those of you who ain't know about Dilla, I suggest you up your knowledge and get your research going.

Rest in Peace Mr. Yancey.
